With more than 300 Community Land Trusts (CLTs) now active across the United States, this model is gaining traction as a long term solution for housing affordability in both urban and rural communities. In Texas, recent momentum has led to a wave of new CLT formations, each taking a different approach based on local needs, funding structures, and market conditions.
This session explores when and why a CLT may be the right tool, what it actually takes to launch one, and how different models can succeed in very different environments. Featuring practitioners from Houston Community Land Trust alongside other Texas based initiatives, the discussion will highlight contrasting approaches, from Fort Worth's large scale startup model to Houston's homebuyer driven strategy.
Attendees will gain practical insight into governance, funding, partnerships, and long term sustainability, along with a clear understanding of the opportunities and limitations of the CLT model. Whether you are evaluating the concept or actively planning a CLT, this session will provide a grounded, real world perspective on how to move forward.
