Addressing the Missing Middle: The Prospect for Workforce Housing

In recent years, government officials have bemoaned the lack of convenient and affordable housing for the workforce that is critical to a properly functioning community. The increasing need for workforce housing is evident in large cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami and Atlanta and in vacation towns in Colorado and Wyoming. This panel will explore the need for workforce housing, potential solutions to the crisis, prospects for financing, and obstacles to implementation. Sometimes referred to as the “missing middle” housing needed is for residents who earn too much for traditional “affordable housing” programs that are geared to low-income earners but not enough to afford traditional middle-class single-family homes.
